How to Secure Smart Keys for Your Home Safety

Use of viral gadget clone will not help you much.

Digital pickpockets have become a household terror with viral videos. The fact that a pocket-sized device such as the Flipper Zero can easily duplicate an RFID fob is frightening, making many people pose the following question: has my front door, office, or garage been hacked?

Although the anxiety can be explained, the truth is more complex. True security lies not in fear blanketing but in the knowledge of the technology you are already on and taking the necessary steps that will help you to improve the areas that are weak. Don’t forget to consult with an expert while installing an RFID warehouse management.

Check the Basics

RFID credentials are not equal. The main division is in the frequency of their operation, which is a good sign of their security posture.

a)     Should We Choose High Frequencies?

It is an old technology. Consider older apartment building fobs, primitive hotel keycards, and a number of corporate ID badges of the early 2000s. These credentials transmissions are non-encrypted ID numbers. They are nothing more than digital barcodes, which are easy to read and clone using devices such as Flipper Zero within a couple of seconds.

b)     What About High Frequency?

This is the new standard; most credit/debit cards (EMV), newer company badges, and more modern smart home locks operate with this standard. Such protocols as MIFARE Classic, DESFire, or NFC are based on encryption and dynamical data exchange, and cloning is practically impossible. The Flipper Zero is able to read their presence, but not to replicate the secure cryptographic handshake.

Things You Need to Focus On

The knowledge will enable you to spend your security efforts in a wise manner.

a)     Your Credit and Debit Cards

Worry not about the online wallet robber. Encrypted 13.56MHz (NFC) technology is used in your modern chip-and-PIN (or contactless) cards. Although there is nothing bad about RFID-blocking wallets, it is rather a response to a problem that was prevented more than 10 years ago. Physical theft of cards or internet phishing is your greater threat.

b)     Access Badges And Fobs

This is what is critical to you. A 125kHz tag is probably used when your work ID or apartment fob is one of the thick non-smart ones. A duplicated badge would allow you access to your building without permission. An RFID-blocking wallet or sleeve is a cost-effective and necessary protection around these particular products, which discourages casual pick-pocketing.

Importance of Upgrading Your Digital Lock

In the case of renters or homeowners who have outdated fobs, replacement of full locks is not always possible. Fortunately, there is a brilliant upgrade path.

  1. The Target: Turn your insecure 125kHz so-called dumb fob into a secure and encrypted mobile credential on your smartphone. RFID patient tracking systems have been proven to be successful in the medical field.
  2. The Toolkit: A programmable, encrypted HF tag (such as a MIFARE DESFire card or a secure NFC sticker) and a compatible, cloud-based access system will be required.
  3. The Process: Clone (Securely): With a device such as a Flipper Zero, ethically copy the facility code of your old fob. This is not the clonable key, but the building address that the reader will be listening to.
  4. Program a Secure Proxy: In a system such as Salto, HID, or through a Raspberry Pi hub, program a new, encrypted 13.56MHz tag or your phone with that same facility code, but with an encrypted, rolling encryption.
  5. Register and Read: Register this new, secure credential using your building reader. The new card or phone is capable of working in place of the old fob, but cannot be easily duplicated.

Digital security is a layered issue. Have no fear of the technology, know it. Check your own credentials and defend the vulnerable 125kHz relics with blocking sleeves and consider a mobile upgrade to encrypted access. You can shut your online doors with security by shifting your weak links from the easily clonable past to the encrypted present.
